The Chicago Healers view of ‘wellness’ is to focus on the importance of good diet, sufficient exercise, and other lifestyle adaptations to achieve and maintain good physical, mental and emotional health.
Wellness is generally used to mean a healthy balance of the mind – body – spirit that results in an overall feeling of wellbeing. It has been used in the context of alternative medicine since the 1950s, but the modern concept of wellness did not become popular until the 1970s.
Dunn defined it as the following “wellness is a direction in progress toward an ever-higher potential of functioning”. Wellness was also defined by the National Wellness Association (Singapore based) as an “active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence”. Wellness is a view of health that emphasizes the state of the entire being (hence ‘body – mind – spirit’) and its ongoing development.
Wellness can also be described as “the constant, conscious pursuit of living life to its fullest potential.”
Wellness is often denoted as either of the following two phrases, “health and wellness” and “wellness programs”. The wellness programs typically offer alternative medicine programs and techniques to improve overall wellness, which may include massage, aromatherapy, counseling, reiki, yoga, nutrition coaching and many other approaches.
Wellness is more often pursued by more affluent societies, as it focuses on managing the body after our basic needs (shelter, warmth, food etc) have been met. Many of the approaches taken in wellness are to target and control many of the side effects of living in an affluent society, such as obesity and a sedentary or inactive lifestyle.
How can you gauge your “wellness”
As previously mentioned wellness is not simply a health approach but encompasses the mind and spirit also. To understand your level of wellness you need to consider factors such as spirituality, family, health, environment, emotional state, social support, leisure activities, destiny and family.
Wellness programs and approaches can vary widely, depending upon the experiences and skills of those promoting them, along with their views on faith and specific alternative medical focus. There are, in general however, two main branches to wellness, the more traditional one focusing on a spiritual approach, and the more modern approach from an overall health perspective, which may include focusing on living in a clean and uncluttered environment, eating organic food, exercising regularly, balancing career, relationship and family and developing religious faith.
