Numerology - Astrology
The study and utilization of numbers and the positions and aspects of celestial bodies, respectively, for insight into a person’s life purpose and for guidance towards change.
Numerology is the term used to describe the practice of associating and relating numbers and numerical systems, to physical objects or living things, it combines many systems, traditions and beliefs.
Numerical divination and numerology were popular among early mathematicians such as Pythagoras. Numerology however is no longer considered part of mathematics but is regarded as ‘pseudomathematics’ by most modern scientists.
Numerology today is often associated with the occult, along with astrology and similar divinatory arts. Numerology as a term, can be applied to those individuals, who place an excess faith in numerical patterns.
There are no set definitions for the meaning of specific digits. Common examples include:
0. Everything or absoluteness. All
1. Individual. Aggressor. Yang.
2. Balance. Union. Receptive. Yin.
3. Communication/interaction. Neutrality.
5. Action. Restlessness.
6. Reaction/flux. Responsibility.
It is common in numerology to carry out ‘digit summing’ which as the name implies involves taking the sum of the digits in a number, and reparting the summing process until a single digit is produced as a result. For a word, the values corresponding to each letter’s place in the alphabet (e.g., A=1, B=2, through Z=26) are summed. Examples of digit summing are shown below:
• 1,571 ? 1 + 5 + 7 + 1 = 14 ? 1 + 4 = 5
• Goodbye ? 7 + 15 + 15 + 4 + 2 + 25 + 5 = 73 ? 7 + 3 = 10
Numerical divination to analyze and define an individuals personality and their propensities is calculated using the individuals birth date and name.
Astrology centers on the belief that knowledge of the positioning of celestial bodies and other related details, is useful in understanding, interpreting and organizing information about an individuals personality and other matters.
Someone who practices astrology is called an ‘astrologer’ or an ‘astrologist’. Astrology has been around for centuries, having first been recorded in the 3rd millenium BC. It has played a role in early astronomy, the shaping of culture and other disciplines throughout history.
You may want to understand the difference between astrology and astronomy. Simply put, astronomy is the scientific study of astronomical objects and phenomena, but without any associated astrological speculation.
Astrology is defined as belief that life on Earth and events experienced on the human scale are directly influenced by the positions of celestial bodies. Modern astrologers define astrology as a symbolic language, and art form and a form of divination. Although there are differing definitions, the common approach is that astrology uses the position of the plants and other celestial bodies (sun, moon & stars) to explain not only past events, but also to determine the future. Most modern day scientists consider astrology to be a ‘pseudoscience’. Studies have determined however, that even though scientists do not generally back astrology, 39% of Americans consider astrology to be scientific, while 31%expressed a belief in astrology.
There are two main methods by which astrologists claim to be able to predict future trends and events. These are known as astrological transits and astrological progressions. In astrological transits, the ongoing and predictive movements of the planets are interpreted as they travel through space and the horoscope. Modern day astrologers don’t try any longer to predict specific events, but focus instead on general developments and trends.
In the past, astrologers tended to rely on their own close observation of celestial bodies and then charting their movements, modern day astrologers however, get their data from astronomers. The data is transformed into a set of astrological tables called ephemerides and these show the changing zodiacal positions over time.
Current Astrological Traditions
The main traditions used by modern astrologers are, Vedic, Western and Chinese astrology.
Vedic and Western astrology are similar in the fact that they both focus on the casting of astrological charts or ‘horoscopes’ to focus on an event based on the position of the sun, moon and planets at the time of the event. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (which links the signs of the zodiac to their original constellations) whereas Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac.
In Chinese astrology a very different tradition has evolved, where each zodiac governs a different year, and combine with the five elements of chinese cosmology to give a 60 (12 x 5) year cycle. Very similar versions exist in Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and other Asian countries.
