How It Works Feldenkrais & the Dentist The Feldenkrais method is essentially achieving health and flexibility through awareness training. The gentle exercises and techniques are designed to wake up the body’s natural ability to heal and regenerate in areas that have been chronically controlled by tension and the stress response. Wherever we have chronically tensed areas in our body there is a withdrawal of awareness, natural control and coordination. Using Feldenkrais methods natural control, functional coordination, a sense of internal easeness and comfort come in to the body. In my dental practice I treat many various TMJ disorders. The group of symptoms ranges from a low-level of tension and discomfort to sharply acute or chronic pain and dysfunction of the jaw. I soon realized that I treated my patients with a similar approach to chronic pain and tension. For more information on Feldenkrais, click here. |
What’s For Dinner? Dr. Peter Glidden, ND When cooking dinner, many people think in terms of calorie counting or what they’re “craving” at the time. Food can be broken down into basically two categories: Energy (calories from fat, carbohydrates and protein) and Nourishment (the nutrient density of the food; vitamins and minerals contents). When determining your menu plan we recommend first to think of “Nourishment”. It’s the nourishment aspect of your meal that contains the vitamins and minerals needed for the thousands of metabolic reactions occurring in the body. But, you also need the “energy” portion of this equation so that your cells have the fuel to drive these metabolic reactions. When choosing what you’ll eat for your bigger meals like breakfast, lunch or dinner, we suggest this standard thought process: 1. Nourishment: Choose at least 2 fruits and vegetables. This can be a combo of 1 fruit and 1 vegetable or 2 vegetables. You can choose more vegetables for the meal if you like but your biggest meals need to include at least 2 servings from the fruit/vegetable category. Try to mix it up! Don’t eat the same fruits and vegetables all the time. Click here for more great meal choices and a tasty recipe. |

Myths about Cholesterol | Here are some facts about heart disease and cholesterol that many people are shocked to find out: - Cholesterol is not a deadly poison, but a substance that you need to be healthy. High cholesterol itself does not cause heart disease.
- The cholesterol found in your blood comes from two sources: cholesterol in food that you eat and cholesterol that your liver makes from other nutrients.
- The amount of cholesterol that your liver produces varies according to how much cholesterol you eat. If you eat a lot of cholesterol, your liver produces less. If you don’t eat much cholesterol, your liver produces more.
The hard part about cholesterol is that we assume because our blood cholesterol is too high that we need to stop consuming foods that contain cholesterol. Cholesterol that naturally occurs in animal foods is not harmful to your health. Click here for proactive heart health tips. |
Back Pain Relief | | Dr. Mark Sobor, MD We all suffer from back pain at some point in our life. Back pain can occur because of a specific injury or it could be ongoing, requiring changes in our lifestyle. Treatment depends on what caused the pain. Before attempting any exercises, you must rule out that the source of your pain requires immediate medical attention. Try to remember what caused your back pain. Was is shoveling snow, lifting heavy furniture or just leaning down the wrong way to tie your shoes? When we reach down without bending our knees, we put tremendous pressure on our lower spine and surrounding muscles. Click here for exercises to help relieve your back pain. |
2009 Tax Updates | Julie Murphy Casserly, CFP®, CLU, ChFC, MBA Potential inflation and changes made by Congress to help bring the country out of a recession will give taxpayers new deductions and credits when filing their taxes this year. Below are a few important things to note prior to completing your taxes. One of these changes says that you can do a Roth conversion this year regardless of your income. It can sound very appealing to spread the tax liability due over 2010 and 2011. But keep in mind, if the current administration does not end up changing the tax brackets, the tax rates on roth conversions could rise to 39.6 percent, up from 35 percent (depending on the tax bracket you fall into). Bottom line, if you do a roth conversion, pay all taxes in 2010 to save you money. If you don’t itemize your taxes, you could be missing out on additional savings, especially with some of these new changes going into effect this year.
