Managing Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) by Gina Orlando, MA. CH | | | When the angle of the sun gradually drops during fall and winter, some people feel “a dark cloud” or moments of depression come over them. Lack of sun afflicts many people with a common condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Low serotonin levels caused by lack of sunlight can cause the blues in almost anyone. Here are some tips for avoiding SAD.
Have Enough Full-Spectrum Light - Using incandescent bulbs in office or home lamps can boost the mood. Increase Serotonin Levels – Exercise, food changes, supplemental nutrients and even hypnosis are good ways to increase the serotonin levels of the brain. Increase athletic activity and protein intake. Get Fresh Air Daily – Even the best air quality in homes and offices cannot beat the real thing. Even on the coldest of winter days it is important to go outside and breathe in some crisp, winter air. Not only does this boost the body’s energy level, but levels of serotonin as well.

Managing IBS During the Holidays with Dr. Tom Bayne, D.C.
|
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is becoming more common, especially in women. According to WebMD.com, 20 percent of Americans suffer from IBS. While IBS is not a disease, it is a set of chronic symptoms that can constantly interfere with eating, sleeping and other day-to-day activities. IBS symptoms can be aided through a professional, personalized workup (everyone’s sensitivities are different), stress management, probiotics and diet. The holidays are especially challenging for those who struggle with IBS.
“The rich foods that are rampant in our holiday diets can easily trigger IBS symptoms,” explains ChicagoHealers.com Practitioner Dr.Tom Bayne, DC. “While all cases of IBS are different, there are several trigger foods that are obvious to almost all IBS patients,” he states. Here, are some food options for IBS patients to have a healthy holiday season.
Avoid Alcohol- With holiday parties every weekend, its hard to avoid alcohol. However it is also a must. Alcohol can cause diarrhea, bloating, and constipation. Peppermint tea calms the colon and is a great way to stay in the holiday spirit. Avoid Sugar- While some may think sugar is needed to make a dish taste great, cutting it out can cut out IBS symptoms. Try a mouthwatering, unsweetened cranberry dish or a sugar-free Pumpkin pie. Save the sugar intake for foods that really need it. “A small amount of sugar is ok,” explains Bayne. “A cookie now and then is a well-deserved holiday treat.” Keep a Food Diary- Perhaps the most important rule for IBS sufferers, keeping a food diary is an effective way to manage symptoms. Once a patient has a good idea of what foods to avoid, they can skip IBS symptoms completely |

| The 5 Aspects of Healing | by Dr. Marilyn Mitchell, M.D.
We human beings are complex and multidimensional. Often we live in limited and habitual patterns that do not allow us to experience our full potential. Healing is the process by which we bring more of ourselves and our inner truth into our lives. As a physician healer, I have worked with many patients to achieve healing, whether there is a physical illness, hormonal imbalance, or emotional issue that calls them into the healing process. We look at 5 aspects of ourselves that function simultaneously, making the fabric of who we are, and then work with each of these.
