Physical exertion or strain, improper or prolonged computer or writing positions, sports injuries or excessive lifting may cause joint pain. Inflammation around the shoulder or knee joints can be triggered by bursitis (fluid accumulation at points of pressure or friction) or tendonitis (inflamed tendons). This can cause pain or tenderness that discourages movement, particularly in the shoulder, causing the muscles to weaken and contract. Joint pain can also be an indication of a viral infection, arthritis, gout and Lyme disease to name a few. Since there are many possible-contributing factors, it is important to rule out the possibility of other underlying problems when experiencing prolonged joint pain of any kind.
