Immune System

The immune system is the body’s primary defense against disease and protects us when we come in contact with a variety of bacterial, viral and fungal threats. It is a complex network comprised of the skin, stomach, pancreas, spleen, liver, bone marrow, thymus gland, the lymphatic system, and immune cells. The skin and gastro intestinal tract try to act as a physical barrier to prevent infection, if infection gets through then the bloodstream and inflammatory response cause exposed body tissue to become warm or swell in an attempt to contain infections and keep them from spreading further. When that fails the spleen works to filter blood, liver to dispose of dead immune cells and the waste they have accumulated and the lymph system to drain the body of potentially harmful substances. Immunity can be impaired by a variety of factors including food allergies, nutritional deficiencies, excess alcohol consumption, obesity, stress, severe trauma, inadequate rest, excessive exercise, chronic antibiotic use, pesticides, drugs, environmental toxicity and hormonal imbalance. An overactive or underactive immune system can lead to a variety of diseases such as allergies, autoimmune diseases, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, and multiple sclerosis.
