After years of experience in both the corporate and wellness industries, we recognized the importance of bringing together information and support to help inspire individuals to create positive, lasting change. We know without a doubt, personal change profoundly affects the prosperity, creativity and ultimately, success of a company.

We’ve spent almost 10 years building a trendsetting wellness network popularly known as Chicago Healers, with cutting edge practitioners from a wide variety of disciplines. And now, we’re thrilled to offer new “Well-Style” series programs aimed at changing the face of corporate culture by bringing wellness, lifestyle and work together in a holistic way.

So Many Reasons Why

What is the cost-to-benefit of a Workplace Wellness Program?

For many companies, medical costs can consume at least half of corporate profits or more and is on the rise. Many employers use cost sharing, managed care plans, risk rating, and cash-based rebates or incentives. The problem with this approach? These methods only move costs around. It’s proven that wellness education, motivation and support stands out as the long-term answer for keeping employees happier, healthier and at lower risk of chronic and preventable illness.

Recently, public and private programs are increasingly designed to promote healthy choices and lifestyles. Employers are becoming more aware that obesity, lack of activity, stress, conflict in the work place all affect the productivity of their employees and ultimately, the business’s bottom line. As a result, innovative employers are providing their employees with a variety of work-site-based health promotion and disease prevention programs. These programs have been shown to improve employee health, increase productivity, and yield a significant return on investment for the employer. With “Well-Style”, there’s a systems theory behind the wellness process itself. Healthful nutrition, stress reduction, energy & communication and productivity processes are not just about feeling better individually, but about doing better at work.

Bottom Line Savings

In a tough economic climate, many companies are making more thoughtful choices about when and where to spend corporate funds, in addition to figuring out how to maximize existing resources.

Our programs are set apart from managed care wellness solutions in two unique and beneficial ways. First, because of our personal and boutique style approach, we come to know your companies specific needs. Our programs are then tailored to suit your desired goals directly. Secondly, we work from a network of Doctors, practitioners and clinicians who we’ve thoroughly vetted and come to know personally.

When we present a program, we provide your employees not only with up-to-date research and information at the time of the sessions, but we provide on-going resources and support. Unlike an insurance company, we actually know and trust the experts we send to your offices! We’re unique in that we can provide long term education and support versus a short, one time introduction of ideas.

For Those Who Love Numbers – A Case History

A recent review of health promotion and disease management programs found a significant return on investment for those programs, with benefit-to-cost ratios ranging from $1.49 to $4.91(median of $3.14) in benefits for every dollar spent on the program. Not only do individual Americans have the power to affect dramatic change in their personal health status, but also the health statistics of the nation.

Cost and Benefit Ratio of Wellness Programs
The benefits our corporate clients have recognized include reduced sick days, fewer health care claims, as well as improved productivity, and improved morale and loyalty.

Cost of Absenteeism
To consider the benefits of such a program, consider the affect on the cost of absenteeism for a company of 150 employees. A recent survey showed that the average rate of absenteeism on any given day is approximately 2.5% i.e. approximately 4 employees absent out of 150 total employees.

The cost of one sick day, is calculated as the annual salary +30% employer costs (benefits, healthcare costs, 401K programs etc) divided by the average number of working days per year (240/yr)

Take a look at Table 1 below, to view the overall costs of sick days to an average firm of 150 employees.

Table 1. Facts And Figures

Staff Average Annual Salary $40,000
# Of Staff 150
Average # Of Working Day Per Year 240
Average # Of Staff Off Sick Per Working Day (2.5%) 4
Annual Employee Costs Per Staff Member (Not Incl. Salary) = 30% $12,000
Average Sick Day Cost (Salary + employee costs per member of staff) / # of Working Days Per Year ($40,000 + $12,000) / 240 = $216.67
Annual Cost of Sick Days (Sick day cost X Average # of staff off sick per working day) X Average # of working days per year ($216.67 X 4) X 240 = $208,003.20
Average Cost Of Sick Days Per Year, Per Member Of Staff (Annual Cost of Sick Days / Number Of Staff) $208,003.20 / 150 = $1386.69
