Tara Gerou, DC
Title: Chiropractor, Holistic Physician
Describe your services:
Dr. Gerou provides a unique system of health care management focusing on the prevention of disease, promotion of wellness and preservation of spirit. She incorporates evidence-based (researched) chiropractic medicine with the alignment principles of yoga, effectively treating a wide range of conditions, including: short-term (acute) and long-term (chronic) neck and back pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, osteoporosis, premenstrual syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, sports injuries, migraines/headaches, anxiety, depression, and poor digestion among many others. A few of her non-invasive treatment options include botanical and vitamin/mineral supplementation, stress and inflammation reduction practices, manual therapy (massage and mobilization techniques), reiki energy healing, and personalized therapeutic yoga instruction inspired by the practices of Hatha, Bhakti, Kundalini, Vinyasa and Iyengar yoga.
What are some benefits/results people see:
The overwhelming response to Dr. Gerou’s treatments has been ‘I feel more relaxed and stress-free than ever before.’ Measureable outcomes in reduction of pain, increases in range of joint motion/stability and overall daily productivity are also experienced after Dr. Gerou’s care. She provides patients with a comforting, empowering, comprehensive and inspired approach to their health care. Her treatments differ greatly depending on each individual patient’s condition and each individual is provided a personalized program tailored to their unique desires, goals and needs. The types of conditions that can benefit from her care include:
-Low Back Pain
-Neck pain
-Headaches and Migraines
-Osteoporosis
-Arthritis and other joint pains
-Stress and Anxiety
-Depression and Fatigue
-Fibromyalgia
-Sport injuries
-TMJ pain
-Discomforts of pregnancy
Dr. Gerou believes that a healthy life begins with a healthy infancy, and she is dedicated to sharing the benefits of prenatal/postnatal yoga, nutrition and a non-invasive or prescriptive approach to the optimal pregnancy for each woman. Her own experiences as a mother have prepared her beyond her medical and yogic studies, and she is eager to share her knowledge with any woman who is dedicated to a natural, organic and inspired motherhood.
Describe a typical session and how someone might prepare for it:
A ‘typical’ session (beyond the comprehensive general physical exam performed at every patient’s first visit) may include a massage or physiological therapeutic session (such as facilitated stretching, ultrasound therapy, electric stimulation therapy, or hot and cold contrast therapy), a chiropractic manipulation and patient education on how their lifestyle may be impacting their health. A patient can prepare for a session at White Lotus by wearing loose, comfortable and moveable clothing, opening their mind and heart and coming into the session with a desire to improve their own health. Pre and post natal patients can not only expect a comprehensive review of their health and wellbeing, direct addressing of any pregnancy or postnatal discomforts, but also a wealth of information and guidance to making the womb the most hospitable place for a child to develop. These sessions may include guided relaxation and meditation, massage and manipulation, and gentle yoga for optimal physical and emotional balance.
What makes you different/good at what you do:
Dr Gerou relies heavily on measureable outcomes and goals. She has a complete and utter respect for the therapeutic order and understands that efficacy and satisfaction will bring repeat customers. Her calming presence, lyrical voice and solid medical training have prepared her to provide a unique service to her patients: comprehensive total being care. Her yoga and medical training provide a strong foundation to her treatment styles and the wealth of tools at her disposal ensure that each patient will receive a personalized and appropriate treatment plan. She does not believe that any “one protocol” could possibly “fit all” and she prides herself on always maintaining a holistic approach to health and health care. Dr Gerou’s unique ability to enhance and compliment the body’s own ability to heal, without the use of a scalpel or prescription pad, draws patients back to her office again and again for continued inspiration for an organic, inspired life.
Describe your education/training:
Dr. Gerou has been on ‘either side of the fence.” She has gained experience working both with the pharmaceutical industry as well as the complementary and alternative health care field. Receiving her Bachelors of Science, with honors in Psychology, from the University of Iowa in 2001, she complemented her education with a vast array of research experiences, including research in the fields of psychology, chiropractic health care, investigational medications and ‘traditional’ allopathic medicine. She has worked intimately with patients suffering from digestive diseases (specifically ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), post-operative pain, pre- and post-menopausal discomforts, high blood pressure and cholesterol, drug and alcohol addiction, chronic pain conditions and depression. She received her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the National University of Health Sciences, and found her primary passion and focus to be on prenatal and postnatal wellness. Through her own pregnancy and childbirth, she learned that the advice often received by pregnant women is non-specific and lacking in aspects of stress-reduction, natural non-medication pain reduction and life balance. Her medical training and her own personal journey serve as a strong foundation for her treatment and counseling style.
