Heart disease and some of its contributing conditions; high blood pressure (hypertension), atherosclerosis (cholesterol plaque build-up in the arteries) and stroke, are generally preventable. Hypertension, a condition that causes the arteries to become constricted, will force the heart muscle to pump harder and harder with a smaller and smaller supply of blood. It can damage arteries, the brain, heart and kidneys. When blood supply to the heart has been diminished the oxygen and nutrients available are inadequate and can contribute to heart attack or congestive heart failure. Additionally, since 25% of the blood pumped from the heart goes to the brain, an interruption will deprive brain cells of needed oxygen causing cells to die and possibly resulting in stroke which can lead to loss of speech, physical movement, or eyesight depending on the part of the brain affected. Atherosclerosis, a common precursor of heart disease, is a result of fatty and protein deposits causing a plaque build-up that can block arteries and interrupt blood flow to the organs. LDL cholesterol deposits fats on arterial walls and can become harmful when it has been oxidized and initiates plaque formation. Despite the damage that LDL cholesterol can cause, in itself, it is not harmful. When broken down properly cholesterol is a valuable nutrient, it is necessary for the maintenance of the body’s cells, it plays a significant role in producing key male and female sex hormones which are critical for the health of the immune system and the mineral-regulating functions of the kidneys. High levels of HDL cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease and contribute to the removal of LDL cholesterol.
