Progesterone and PCOS

Progesterone

Next we are going to talk about progesterone, because it affects body fat and moods. Progesterone deficiency can contribute to PMS and cause problems at any age, particularly after a pregnancy or tubal ligation, or during peri- or postmenopause. When progesterone levels drop or when estradiol levels are high relative to progesterone, estrogen dominance can occur, and this affects body fat and waist circumference.

Men Produce Estradiol too
Posted by Valerie Early  |  Tagged: , , , , ,  |  No Comments

Let’s not forget about men. Men also produce estradiol. When estradiol is elevated in a man, it can contribute to prostate issues and waist fat and, often, increased levels of an enzyme called aromatase. For this reason it is very important to omit or limit all alcohol, lose body fat, and check for medications that can elevate levels of estradiol. Common medications that increase estradiol in men include antifungal treatments, cholesterol-lowering medications, blood pressure drugs, antibiotics, heartburn medications, and over-the-counter pain relievers such as aspirin and ibuprofen.

Estrogen: A closer look
Posted by Valerie Early  |  Tagged: , , , , ,  |  No Comments

We are defining these hormones because they contribute to body fat and well-being. As mentioned earlier, the body produces three types of estrogen. The first is Estrone (E1). It is made in our body fat and ovaries. Its production often increases with perimenopause, which can increase your risk of breast cancer. Even if you have low levels of E1, I do not recommend using estrone in any bioidentical hormone therapy treatments. I would not recommend using Tri-est (a combination of three estrogens: estradiol, estriol, and estrone). Estrone is generally not used by anyone having a personal or family risk of breast cancer.

Three main hormones affect our body fat, weight, and moods our entire life. Let’s first define these major hormones, and in future posts we’ll explore some of the symptoms associated with imbalances of these hormones.
