Back/Neck

Approximately 70% of adults suffer from back pain at some point in their lives, about one-third of those have a persistent or recurring condition. Sometimes back problems will appear suddenly without a known trauma or cause and a specific diagnosis can be difficult to ascertain. Back problems may be contributed to by many things including: injury or trauma, strained muscles or ligaments, slipped discs, fractures, aging joints, infections, gallstones, kidney stones, poor posture, being overweight, and occasionally psychological factors or serious conditions, including cancer may be responsible. Many back problems can come from emotional causes. Since the spine is our main support of the body, people who feel like they are not supported in their work or home situations may subconsciously manifest these feelings with back pain. This can also apply to shoulder pain for people who take on a lot of responsibility, as in feeling like ‘the weight of the world’ is resting on your shoulders.

By listening to the client’s view of what is going on, I energetically and intuitively work on the issues that may be contributing to the pain. I also go down the spine vertebrae by vertebrae, energetically strengthening each one and its connections to the body along with the discs, muscles and ligaments.

Back pain is often aggravated by a habit of sitting on the sacrum instead the “sitting bones;” this chronically stresses lumbar soft-tissue. Telling ourselves to sit up straight not only doesn’t help; it makes matters worse. After we tire from over-exerting to sit up straight, we sink even deeper into sitting on the sacrum, deeper into a slump.

To bring habits associated with sitting into awareness, an initial instruction can be “Don’t DO anything to try to change how you sit but just observe what you are doing.” Rather than leaping to try to impose a solution, an AT strategy is to gently shift focus from the “end” (such as “Sit up straight!”) — to the “means” (the underlying processes involved in sitting). Simultaneously, I may manually guide the student into an experience of more optimal muscle organization that facilitates sitting without effort, an experience from which student learns.

Not having faith in the flow of life. Make affirmations like: “I trust the process of life. All I need is always taken care of. I am safe.

Try this Pelvic Tilt. Lay on your back, with your knees bent and together, hands on your abdomen, so that you can relax. Take a full breath in, and as you exhale, slowly flatten your low back to the floor, release slowly back to neutral as you inhale and repeat in sets of 5.

Muscles work in counter part with other muscles. This means that strain in the low back indicates that those muscles are tight, and it also means that the abdominals are stretched and weak.
