Cleansing With the Masters – by Alyce M. Sorokie
The Story of Miss D and meeting Alyce Sorokie: Gut Wisdom – by Darlene Paris
As we transition to Spring, our bodies naturally transform and adapt to the new environment. We are now going from a contracted and inward state of mind and body into an expansive and awakened state of mind and body. This is a natural process. Many of us are already experiencing the change and are already releasing toxins at the most cellular level. How many of you have already experienced a cold? Are you sure that it is a cold that you just experienced or the body’s natural cleansing process for springtime renewal? How well did you take care of yourself during the wintertime months? The symptoms that you are experiencing will let you know.
How can we prepare our bodies for an easy transition into spring?
First and foremost, HYDRATE?
Most of us drink less water during the cold season. We forget that there is less moisture in the air during this time of year which can dehydrate us even quicker. Our mind and body relies on water for it’s survival. This is crucial! We are made up of about 70% water. Our brain is 85% water! If we are dehydrated, we are jeopardizing our life sustaining processes and function. Water must first go to the brain and vital organs which are necessary for our survival. Any water that is left goes to our tissues, cartilage, tendons, bones, and peripheral parts of our body. Most importantly, water that is left over helps dilute the toxins at the most cellular level to enhance metabolism and cleansing.
Rule of thumb: You must drink at least half your weight in ounces. An example would be, if you way 180 lbs, your water consumption should be atleast 90 oz. It is best to drink most of your water by 4:00pm to prevent evening trips to the bathroom.
Enhance the electrolyte content: Add a squeeze of lemon or lime to your water. You can also infuse your water with slices of fruit or vegetable.
Secondly, ALKALIZE!
The mind and body are the most healthiest and are in the most optimal performance in an alkaline environment. Alkalinity means that you have enough mineral reserve to create a solution in your body that is not acidic. An acidic body is corrosion, degeneration, oxidation from the inside out. You have a very delicate internal environment. Your blood pH must be between 7.35 to 7.45 to keep yourself alive! If you are not getting enough alkalizing minerals such as Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium, and Iron, your body will once again switch into survival mode and take from your surrounding tissues, bones, and organs so that your blood pH stays within it’s limits thereby keeping your heart alive.
Great sources of alkalizing minerals are organic or farm grown fruits and vegetables. I recommend eating more from the vegetable side especially the green leafy vegetables like kale, swiss chard, spinach, and arugula. Fruits exacerbate the cleansing and do too much all at once and to where your body cannot quickly cleanse. If you have a grimy tub, fruits are like the scrub brush. You scrub all the thick grime away; however, you only have one drain. Your body will not eliminate the garbage quick enough.
Third, VITALIZE!
Many of us over cook our foods. What’s the vitality and nutrients in that? Eating more raw foods that are properly prepared and seasoned with herbs and spices like parsley, tumeric, cayenne pepper, curry powder, and himalayan salt revitalizes and nourishes our mind and body. There is a liveliness and energetic aspect of raw foods. Our body naturally registers whole fresh food and utilizes these foods more efficiently. It’s time to reawaken the senses, the mind, and the body for spring…eat living foods that are at room temperature.
Fourth, ADDED NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT.
You can help your body out by additional nutritional support to your regimen. Keep it simple since cleansing is a gradual process. The following are highly recommended:
Probiotics to help rebalance the good flora in your gut.
Digestive Enzymes to help give more attention in breaking down your food for greater assimilation. This will also put less stress on your digestive system.
Chlorophyll helps to remove toxins, alkalize your body, and heal your colon.
Plant based trace minerals to help create a more alkaline environment and to provide the trace minerals for your cells to go about it’s metabolic processes.
Fifth, NO NEED TO OVERSTIMULATE
These foods and substances are a stimulant to your body and should be cut down or eliminated completely to enhance the effects of cleansing. These are nicotine, caffeine, simple carbohydrates, processed sugar, and animal protein.
Once you have prepared your mind and body for cleansing, you can enhance this process by incorporating cleansing herbs for your liver and colon. This will gently scrub your insides and enhance cellular renewal. When using herbs and products for cleansing please seek professional advice.
To ask the question, why is it important to cleanse your body is like asking why is it important to clean your house? How do you feel afterwards? Your mind becomes more at peace. Your thoughts become less chaotic. You feel more energized. Nervous system irritants are flushed away allowing for less symptoms to express themselves. Really, when you see a dirty home, does it not irritate you? You feel more alive! Cleansing creates more space for healing, regeneration, and self regulation to occur. Cleansing also opens you up to more creativity and spontaneity. Cleansing eases your emotions and mood. Who doesn’t want that? You now have more time to play and enjoy this beautiful season.
Long term benefits of cleansing are simple. Youthfulness, vitality, and optimal health.

What did spiritual leaders such as Jesus, Moses, Gandhi, and Krishna have in common? They all preached the wonders of internal cleansing for purity of the mind, body and spirit. What did these wise men know about the value of internal cleansing? They knew that if we eliminated our toxins , our inner wisdom would invite a healing on all levels.
What is a toxin? A toxin is a substance that creates irritation or causes harmful effects in our bodies. Toxins usually enter through four access points. They can be absorbed through the skin, inhaled through the respiratory tract, ingested through the mouth into our gastrointestinal tract and created within us via unresolved thoughts, emotions and stress. This leaves us with symptoms from fatigue, arthritis, poor skin, bad breath, digestive ailments, chronic infections, overweight, mental and emotional imbalances, to more serious health conditions.
The walls of our colon can become coated with layers of hardened waste and rubbery mucus from years of improper eating of refined, fiberless, sugary foods. Many of us have overeaten to suppress or comfort ourselves during times of frustration, loneliness, anger, and so forth. Medications have altered our gut’s vital bacteria balance, causing irritated stomach and intestinal wall linings. Environmental toxins have burdened our bodies with hazardous waste material. Negative emotions and stress have tightened our gut into knots and spasms, as well as left behind degenerative chemical waste from the release of the stress-fighting hormones. This literally creates a toxic waste site within us!
Our body’s wisdom does its best to protect us from these toxins by surrounding them with mucus, water, and fat. Toxins will remain in our body tissue and organs until they are removed. A complete internal cleansing program can move these toxins out of the body. It can release toxins that are stored in the fatty tissue of our body and be eliminated. Buried emotions may “ come out of the closet” to be felt and released. Mentally we can cleanse non-health giving thoughts. Spiritually, blocks may be moved to open us up to a deeper connection- with our loved ones, with ourselves, and with our God.
Your lack of knowledge does not change the negative impact of toxins on your body, however with new information, you can be informed and encouraged to change the future of your health status.

by Darlene Paris
I first became aware of Alyce Sorokie two years ago when I was suffering from bloating constipation, and chronic yeast infections. Sorokie, owner of a holistic health clinic called Partners in Wellness, was giving lectures at metaphysical bookstores in Chicago where she talked about the importance of detoxification, offered tips for keeping the gut healthy, and revealed how our emotions impinge upon our overall well-being.
I decided to finally call Sorokie for an appointment when I noticed that my belly swelled like a balloon after every meal. I was ready to enroll in her seven day cleansing program she calls the ‘Gut Wisdom Cleanse’.
I was a little puzzled by Sorokie’s decision to use the term “Gut Wisdom”. At first, I thought it was just catchy phrase–a play on words to lure people who had never thought about cleansing their bodies into her office doors. Then I remembered the times my grandmother would say she had a gut feeling about something or the other, and how she always encouraged me to trust the feelings that I had in my gut.
Sorokie confirmed that my rising belly was my gut’s way of talking to me. According to this holistic health practitioner, whenever our lives are out of balance, we often experience a symptom in our gut such as bloating, constipation, or just plain old gas.
A colon therapist for fifteen years, Sorokie educates people on how their emotions affect gut health. Before she starts clients on a three or seven day cleanse, she has them fill out a questionnaire which lists a variety of physical symptoms as well as various emotional states they’re asked to check if it applies to them.
As I filled out the section regarding my emotional and spiritual well being, I was surprised by the depth of the questions I needed to answer: “Can you be alone with yourself without constant distractions and be still?”
I didn’t know how to answer this one. My meditation practice has equipped me with methods for being still, but there are times when I want to run from uncomfortable situations in my life and sitting in a silent room drives me absolutely crazy. So I checked “no”.
Then there were other questions that seemed to be associated with my nagging health issue: constipation. Do you feel stuck? My answer again was yes and no, and I wished there was a spot for me to write sometimes. Since there was no room for such lack of clarity, I checked the box marked “yes” because I often feel as if I’m running in place in my life rather than moving free and uninhibited.
Sorokie explained that the cleanse would entail my drinking a protein shake in the morning and taking some natural herbs and vitamins that would strengthen my immune system and balance the flora in my gut.
She also said that the cleanse included juicing as well as eating fruits and raw or steamed vegetables. It also involved a series of colonics to help remove toxins.
I was confident that Sorokie could help me with my health problems. I had spoken with several people who had attended her ‘Gut Wisdom’ seminars and raved about their new understanding of the inner workings of the body.
I had also talked to people who had been through the three and seven day Gut Wisdom Cleanse, and had experienced breakthroughs not only physically, but emotionally as well.
I was confident Sorokie could help me.
Sorokie was raised by parents who believed in natural healing. Having grown up in a family that owned the first health food store in Chicago, she was brought up on healthy foods, vitamins, and herbs.
There was no such thing as a sick day in the Sorokie household,” she says. On days when she felt a little under the weather, her mother would give her an enema to help balance her body. She was encouraged to drink fresh juices and rest until the malady from which she was suffering went away.
There were no medicine cabinets in our household.” Only shelves stocked with vitamins, minerals and herbs. Sorokie was ignorant about anything that smacked of conventional medicine. She hadn’t even heard of antibiotics until she attended college.
Sorokie began to question her parent’s dedication to natural living, however, when her father, whose life was saved from cancer when he changed his ‘meat and potatoes’ diet to one which included lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, died from colon cancer thirty years after he had overcome cancer of the urethra.
Like many of her father’s loyal customers, Sorokie, who was a teenager at the time, couldn’t believe he was dead.
People would ask me “how could this man, who helped us with all of our health problems, die from cancer?” Sorokie recalls.
She didn’t know how to answer them. I felt like a charlatan or something. “I, myself, didn’t know how it happened. And the people were looking for me to say something, but their eyes were asking did he lie about his lifestyle?”
Sorokie’s attempt to make sense out of her father’s death sent her searching for the real cause of her father’s disease. Sure, food played a role in contributing to good health, but was eating the right food the only thing necessary for keeping the body well?
Her father had done all the right things. “He had a pristine diet, and he did everything right whenever he cleansed,” she says. “But if he had eaten the right food, then what in the world could have killed him,” Sorokie pondered.
Then she remembered her father’s anger.
“My father, like many men of his time, kept his feelings tightly bottled within him,” Sorokie writes in a book she wrote entitled Gut Wisdom: Understanding and Improving Your Digestive Health (Career Press)– the culmination of her quest to understand the nature of illness and disease.
“The only feeling he seemed able to express was anger, and my father was angry. He was angry when he spoke, when he ate, and when he worked. He marinated in rage. My father, in his anger, would often grip his gut and shout, “This is making my gut sick!”
Although she admits that her theories about her father’s death are, at best, conjectures, she’s convinced that there is a relationship between our emotions and our total well being.
She expounds upon this relationship in Gut Wisdom.
In this book, Sorokie writes about the connection between negative emotions and the function of our digestive system.
The book offers easy-to-follow guidelines for improving digestive health, but it also relays information that we’ve never heard before regarding our digestive system. It explains the relationship between our brain and our gastrointestinal track. It also reveals that the gut is actually a second brain.
“This fact is not recognized in the United States,” Sorokie says, “but it’s acknowledged in other cultures such as India, China, Japan and Africa.”
She goes on to report that Chinese Taoists believe that we not only digest and assimilate food in our gut, but we also digest our emotions.
“We have two brains,” Sorokie says. “One is located in your skull in the other is in the gut lining of your gastrointestinal system. Both brains originated during fetal development from tissues called the neural crest”.
“One section turned into the central nervous system and the other developed into the enteric nervous system, or second brain in your gut,” she says. “We don’t consciously digest our food. This is the job of our second brain or enteric nervous system.”
But our abdominal brain is intimately connected with our cerebral brain. “When your cerebral brain experiences stress, such as when you get fired from your job or if you had an argument with your significant other, your gut may respond with cramping nausea or a bout of diarrhea.”
“Gut discomfort in the form of constipation, cramping and irritable bowel syndrome can affect your cerebral brain by sending up messages of pain, altering your moods and your behavior.”
The relationship to the gut and brain becomes evident in the colon therapy session when a client becomes to have an emotional release during a session.
During my first colon therapy appointment with Sorokie, she asked whether I was in a relationship.
Usually tight lipped about this subject, I immediately revealed that I was involved in a clandestine relationship with a man who was newly separated and that I had a feeling that he was still in love with his wife.
Having set the intention to release a relationship that no longer worked for me at the beginning of my cleansing program, I told Sorokie that I had had a discussion with the person with whom I had a clandestine relationship and realized that I was not ready to move on.
As I recalled the details of my discussion, my colon began to release not only the toxic waste that was being held in my intestines, but the emotions that were also locked in that area as well.
Sorokie helped me see how my not letting go of that relationship in particular, and other situations in my life may be the contributing cause for my bloating belly and chronic constipation.
“When someone is cleansing, old memories and stresses get an opportunity to rise,” she says.
“When I’m massaging the abdominal area during a session, the cells in the abdominal area which are holding old memories, feel the warmth and tenderness, and feel safe enough to let go”, she says.
In Gut Wisdom Sorokie encourages us to listen to our gut. “When you’re seeing bloating, feeling gas pain, or experiencing discomfort from an irritable bowel flare up or an ulcer, your gut is speaking to you.”
“Instead of trying to medicate it away, or ignore it, or wish it could get cut out, it’s good to look at it as a gift.” The gut knows how to get your attention. It’s speaking to you. And if you’re wise, the next time it tries to get your attention, you’ll listen. “The gut knows,” Sorokie says.
