Aging is the gradual decline or normal slowing down of body systems and functions that occur naturally as people grow older, and varies from person to person. This natural process becomes apparent during the middle stages of life when specific physiological changes such as loss of skin resiliency that causes wrinkles and sagging skin, changes in hearing and vision, memory loss, and graying hair or hair loss begin to appear. These external physical changes may affect a person’s confidence and enthusiasm for living. As we age our immune system becomes weakened increasing susceptibility to colds, flu and other infectious illnesses. There is a decrease in joint flexibility, bone mass and muscle strength. We may also experience changes in sleep patterns, lose of interest or decrease in sexual capacity. Aging increases the risk of developing heart disease, cancer and other serious diseases also rises. You may know that increased stress—physical or chemical—causes our body to degenerate and age more rapidly. However, Thoughts & how you FEEL are an integral part of the aging process as well. In general negative thoughts/feelings create negative chemical reaction which waste energy, fatigue organs, and age the body. Not everyone ages to the same degree. Adaptability to stress is the key secret. We focus on increasing your body’s ability to adapt to stressors whether they are physical, mental/emotional and/or chemical by keeping your body free of interference and by helping you make choices which add to overall health.

There is so much joy and wisdom available to us as we age if we can only develop the perspective needed for the challenges ahead. Learning mindfulness practices help us take a new view of the physical and emotional realities of aging, helping us develop an acceptance of reality, flexibility, self-compassion, and a new way to find meaning.I have come to believe in the impact mindfulness-based psychotherapy can have in shifting our response to the very real challenges of aging. We start finding we have more hope, more flexibility, more ability to enjoy in the moment and more calm when the crises do occur.
