Diagnose Breast Cancer Before it Starts with Dr. Tom Bayne, DC

According to BreastCancerOnline.com, 15 percent of all breast cancer cases occur between the ages of 20 and 44. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, ChicagoHealers.com Practitioner Dr. Tom Bayne, DC, explains that breast thermography, a non-invasive procedure that can help better diagnose breast cancer, is a simple but crucial addition to a routine breast exam. Breast thermography is a radiation-free tool that uses body heat to diagnose breast cancer and is beneficial for women. Breast thermography exams are a proactive approach to being able to detect functional imbalances.

“Women with fibrous or dense breasts often have signs of breast cancer that go undetected by a mammogram,” says Dr. Bayne. “Breast thermography is useful to these women because early degenerative changes can be detected.”

There are two types of thermography, Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging and Contact Regulation Thermography. Dr. Tom Bayne explains how each type of thermography is used.

Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging:
Illustrates areas of heat
Analyzes for abnormalities, asymmetries, abnormal vascular patterns and gradual changes
Detects irregular patterns in the breast that occur before a noticeable lump is formed

Contact Regulation Thermography:
Based on the physiology of heat in humans
Evaluates the response of the automatic nervous system when a cold stress is induced
Provides information about the functions of organs, glands and tissues
Identifies disease and imbalances that put the patient at a higher risk for future disease

When exploring thermography options, please consult your doctor when deciding which procedure to use.

Tip of the Week: Simple Foods to Help Kick the Holiday Pounds with Malina Chin, LAc

According to ShapeFit.com, the average American gains 7-10 pounds during the holiday season. With the weather getting cooler, many people will get the urge to hibernate and seek comfort food to satisfy appetite. ChicagoHealers.com Practitioner Malina Chin, Lac, explains that many people can become sluggish and depressed in the long, cold fall and winter months.

“The end of the year causes the entire body to slow down and turn inward,” says Chin. “When this occurs, many people tend to steer away from exercise and turn to food instead.”

According to Chin, eating according to the seasons will help naturally regulate the mood. The holiday season often causes a yearning for fatty foods which is most likely a craving for Vitamin D. Most assume that all fats are unhealthy but good fats can actually help repair arteries, support the endocrine system and improve mood. Coconut oil is a fat perfect for the holiday season because it can actually prevent inflammation throughout the body. Avocadoes and olives, which are staples in many cultural cuisines, and can be a great addition to a diet because they contain healthy fat. Chin provides the following tips for healthy eating during the holidays:

Avoid The Pounds – To prevent winter weight gain, add fibers and whole grains to the diet such as barley, wild rice and black rice.
Warm It Up – When cold, warm up with spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric and cumin.
Tone It Down – If the heat has you too hot, cool off with mint, cucumbers and salads.
Goodbye To Dry – If you are feeling dry during winter, add pears, plums and honey for an added twist to your diet.

Chin also recommends Three Roots Soup, for a perfect healthy, holiday meal:

· Ingredients: 32 oz. Organic Chicken or Vegetable Stock, 2 cups medium beet cubed, 2 cups 3-4 medium carronts cubed, 2 cups small daikon radish cubed, 1-2 slices raw ginger (equal amounts and cubed)

· Bring stock to boil with ginger slices

· Add roots and re-boil

· Simmer on medium heat 30-45 minutes until the roots are soft

· Serve warm
